What to Wear for Studio Sessions

One of the questions we get asked the most is, "What should we wear?"

The good news? There isn't one perfect answer.

The best outfits are the ones that feel comfortable, reflect your family's style, and let the focus stay on you, not your clothes. Here are a few of our favorite tips to help you feel confident before your session.

Start with Mom

We always recommend choosing Mom's outfit first. When you feel confident, everyone else naturally falls into place. Once you've picked your outfit, build the rest of the family's looks around it using coordinating colors instead of matching outfits.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same white shirt and jeans.

Instead, choose colors that complement each other. Mixing different shades, textures, and patterns creates a much more natural, timeless look.

Some of our favorite color palettes include:

  • Creams & Ivory

  • Sage & Olive Greens

  • Taupe & Beige

  • Rust & Terracotta

  • Soft Blues

  • Warm Browns

  • Dusty Mauves

Think About Texture

Texture photographs beautifully and adds depth to your images.

We love:

  • Linen

  • Knit sweaters

  • Flowy dresses

  • Lace details

  • Denim

  • Cotton gauze

  • Corduroy

  • Chunky knits

Keep Patterns Simple

A little pattern can be beautiful, but too many can become distracting.

Choose subtle florals, stripes, or small prints, and avoid large logos, graphic tees, neon colors, or anything that pulls attention away from the people in the photo.

Dress for the Season

One of the easiest ways to create timeless images is by dressing for the environment.

Spring calls for light layers and soft colors.

Summer is perfect for breathable fabrics and lighter tones.

Fall is our favorite season for rich earth tones, cozy sweaters, boots, and layers.

Winter looks beautiful with creams, deep greens, warm browns, and textured fabrics.

Don't Forget the Little Details

Take a few minutes before your session to think about the finishing touches.

  • Neutral shoes photograph best.

  • Empty pockets of phones and keys.

  • Remove smart watches if you don't want them in your photos.

  • Freshly steamed clothing makes a huge difference.

  • Clean fingernails are surprisingly noticeable in close-up images.

Most Importantly...

Your session isn't about having the perfect outfit.

It's about capturing this season of your life exactly as it is.
