What to Wear for Outdoor Sessions

Outdoor sessions are some of our favorites. Whether we're wandering through a wildflower field, exploring a creek, walking downtown, or chasing the sunset, your outfit plays a big part in creating timeless images.

The goal isn't to dress up like someone else. It's to wear something that feels like you while complementing the scenery around you.

Start with One Outfit You Love

Choose one outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable, then build everyone else's around it. We always recommend coordinating colors instead of matching everyone exactly.

Think About Your Location

Your surroundings matter just as much as your clothing.

Open fields & wildflowers
Think soft neutrals, creams, sage, dusty blue, blush, or warm earth tones.

Creeks & wooded trails
Olive green, rust, cream, tan, denim, and soft browns photograph beautifully.

Downtown sessions
Don't be afraid to dress things up a little! A classic dress, linen button-down, or tailored outfit pairs perfectly with brick buildings and city streets.

Choose Colors That Work Together

Our favorite outdoor color palettes include:

  • Cream & Taupe

  • Olive & Beige

  • Rust & Cream

  • Dusty Blue & Tan

  • Sage & Ivory

  • Camel & White

  • Soft Denim & Neutral Browns

These colors photograph beautifully in every season and allow your family to be the focus of the images.

Dress for Movement

One of our favorite things to capture is movement.

Flowy dresses, skirts, lightweight cardigans, scarves, and layers create beautiful motion in your images and help tell the story of your session.

Layers Are Your Friend

Adding layers creates variety without needing a full outfit change.

Think:

  • Denim jackets

  • Knit cardigans

  • Flannels

  • Vests

  • Hats

  • Boots

  • Simple jewelry

Keep Comfort in Mind

If you're constantly adjusting your clothes, your photos will show it.

Choose shoes you can comfortably walk in, especially if we'll be exploring fields, trails, or uneven ground. If you're planning to wear heels, bring a comfortable pair to walk between locations.

What to Avoid

  • Neon colors

  • Large logos

  • Athletic clothing

  • Graphic t-shirts

  • Matching everyone exactly

  • Bright white sneakers (unless they're intentionally part of the look)
